Spring Equinox

Spring Equinox is the finish line to the marathon we call winter. The days continue to become shorter, and our circadian rhythm is most happy when there is a balance between light and darkness.

I have been offering a Winter Solstice celebration for years. This will be the first year to offer a Spring Equinox Celebration. I’m very excited.

Spring is a time of clearing. We dust off the keepable and discard those that no longer serve a purpose in our lives. What if we polish up our body the same way with some myofascial and somatic release? Then bring in some Yin movements to get the energy moving, followed by a gong sound bath. After practice, we will enjoy delicious nourishing food to restore and uplift us.

Moving From The Inside Out - Summer Solstice

As we move into the longest and lighter days of summer, it feels natural to be more engaged with the world outside. We are more inclined to be active and to be more dynamic in our movements. This activity also needs to be balanced by movements of stillness in order to anchor and harness bountifulness and fruits of our actions. Moving and breathing with the long time sun.

Tiffany Sparrow Grace and Rene Johnson will be working together to help you to connect to your balanced vitality, through a yoga practice that combines both dynamic or yang postures with supported restorative moments. At completion of posture movement will be an extended savasana with sound therapy, offering sounds that will both loosen stuck energy as well as assist with tonification and integration.

The movement of energy that we will create will provide more depth, authenticity, and sustainability as we move in recognition of what we offer in life.

A beautiful feast-snack will be provided by Rene, with time to share after our practice.

Saturday, June 22

Time: 4-7 PM

Cost $50

Moving From The Inside Out - Spring Equinox

During the winter months, we are all more prone to internal processes. If the processing slows down too much we can lose our inspirations and become stagnant or stuck. The energy of the spring equinox is awakening and enlivening us. We all want to feel more enthusiastic, energetic, excited about life and to feel love.

Tiffany Sparrow Grace and Rene Johnson will be working together to help you to connect to the depth of your awareness, through chakra mantras and movements which will help us to connect to the subtle body, the energetic layer and engage that into our physicality.

The movement of energy that we will create will provide more depth, authenticity, and sustainability as we mover forward to the warmer months, where we shift to more external processing. This will create a "trust" of the unknown so that we are more able to move forward and take advantage of all the opportunities of the intentions we are creating.

We will have snacks and time to share after our practice.

Saturday, March 23

Time: 4-7 PM

Cost $50

Spring Forest Qigong Level 2 Workshop: With Sue Crites

Spring Forest Qigong Level 2 Workshop

Qigong is a gentle moving meditation to help you balance and heal your body, mind, and spirit. Spring Forest Qigong is a simple from of Medical Qigong created by Qigong Master Chunyi Lin.

In this Level 2 workshop, you will learn to build and strengthen your own internal energy and the many ways you can use Spring Forest Qigong (SFQ) to help yourself and others to heal. You will learn how to scan the body to detect energy blockages, which are believed to be the root of sickness or disease in the body. You will learn how to open up blockages and balance the energy of the body to get the energy flowing smoothly and harmoniously. You will also learn how colour and the Five Elements can help the healing process.

Energy healing is from your soul. In SFQ it is about learning techniques to share unconditional love, kindness, and forgiveness energy to help open up blockages and facilitate healing.

In SFQ Level 1, you learned how the slow gentle movements of SFQ Active Exercises strengthen your physical energy, open your energy channels and balance your body’s energy. In SFQ Level 2, you will learn how to do four new Active Exercises to help increase your healing energy and develop your power of visualization to help heal yourself and others.

You will learn the healing techniques of “sword fingers” and “thunder palms” to treat pain, heal colds, improve blood pressure, and more; how to develop psychic energy; defend against negative energy; protect your energy from being drained or stolen; and to support specific conditions and organs, and how these are related.

There is no prerequisite for this workshop, but SFQ Level 1 is highly recommended and will help you get the most out of your experience. Please contact Sue for Level 1 training (online or privately).

Paint Night!

Paint Night!

When we create, we experience ourselves in new ways. When we share, this makes the qualities more magical!

This paint night will be an extraordinary event. Using an animal spirit guide, the Hummingbird Hawk Moth. We will look at the significance of this amazing beautiful, almost mystical creature and how it’s energies can be used to guide us.

This week represents the end of a large number of cycles, and next week will bring so many new energies to play with, as well as a new month. These are large, long term energies, which promise to bring about lasting change. We are entering into an 11 month, which in numerology is the number of Self Mastery. October is the month of Unification and New Creation.

As the artist Jason Harcus guides us through to paint the Hummingbird Hawk Moth, I will translate the energies that it will provide for you.

This year we have been asked to look deeply into our shadows and lovingly accept them. When there is deep transformation we need to be in darkness to see the contrast the light provides for the sake of synthesis. Strife, conflict, confusion, either internal or external are all part of exposing the underbelly of truth to make it more accessible to transform. When we shine light on that which is in darkness, it doesn’t seem so scary anymore. We can dissipate our fears and transform long term misguided energies which have held us hostage.

You don’t need to have any previous experience, or skills to paint! All instruction and materials will be provided. Snacks and one glass of wine will also be provided. If you would like more than one glass please feel free to BYOB.

When: Saturday, November 3

Time: 7:00PM - 11:00PM …. or until we are done.

Cost: $60

A Staycation Retreat!

You don't always have to leave town to have a refreshing getaway from the intensities life can bring.  Sometimes you just have to disconnect to reconnect, and you find you come back a calmer, clearer,  version of you.

Join Kat Boehm and Rene Johnson as we start off this deeply nurturing day with a gentle yoga class, where we will breathe stretch and wake up our bodies and our minds.  This will be followed by a guided Mindfulness Meditation. We will break for a delicious lunch in the garden.  Spending time amongst the flowers and trees.

After lunch, we will return to a deeply restful restorative practice to help us digest everything; food, new thoughts, new ideas.  Followed by more Mindfulness Meditation, helping you to put space between you and your emotions. Summer Solstice Blessings

Summer solstice is coming up on June 21.  On Friday, June 22 I will be offering a solstice celebration.  A gathering of the community together to celebrate all of the positive pieces of your life!  What feeds you and, what do you want to throw into the fire?

We will start the evening with a slow and connected movement class from 6:30-8:00 PM. After class, dinner will be served in the garden.  Once satiated by dinner, we will gather around a bonfire and celebrate all that has grown in your life since the winter solstice.

Spending as much time outside on this day to allow ourselves to fully appreciate the gift of the light.  This is the longest day with the shortest shadow.  It's where time seems to stand still if just for a moment before it starts it's decent back into the darkness of winter.  Let's embrace this time together and enjoy what it!

Cost is $50 per person.  Please confirm with payment by Wednesday, June 20.  Payment can be made by e-transfer to shantiyoga@mail.com

I'm looking forward to seeing you!

The Power Of Breath: Part 2

The Power Of Breath: Part 2

Prana is the vital life force which moves through our bodies via the breath.  When allowed prana will move into every part of your body, interpenetrating each cell.  Most importantly prana is the link which connects your physical body, astral (the energy field around your body), your mind and your emotions.

Our breath is the most powerful tool for transformation.  It can heal your body, maintain health, and calm your mind.   It can also soothe frayed nerves.  There is a neural connection between your emotions, your brain and your heart.  When you experience intense emotions, like fear, frustration, anger, anxiety, and worry your body's respiratory and cardiovascular systems are greatly affected through this neural connection.  Your breath and heart rate speed up, this has a great effect on your ability to think clearly, as well as affect you physically.  If your systems get distorted we can get stuck here!

In level 2 we will be working with various pranayama (breathing) techniques. The practice will incorporate breath and movement and is designed to help you make the most effective use of your prana, or vital life force.  It can help things like depression, anxiety, insomnia and asthma, digestive disorders as well as other health problems.

Please come dressed for practice.  If you attended level 1 please bring your notebook. If you did not attend level 1 and have not taken classes with me, please come and do a drop in class before level 2.

Nurturing Self-Compassion

We all need self-care, love and acceptance; these states of being allow the heart to feel safe and willing to meet life as it is.  Mindfulness meditation is not only a lifestyle and practice technique we can use to collect and calm the mind, it also develops compassion.

Compassion - as the Buddha described: is a quivering of the heart in response to that which is difficult.

If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?"~ RuPaul

Join Kat Boehm in a exploratory workshop to nourish and develop self compassion.  Through the formal practice of guided meditation, sharing within our community, and offering current neuroscience information, this workshop will remind us of our deepest intentions - to be kind and gentle.

SPRING EQUINOX - The Power Of Breath

Spring is a time of rebirth.  What is the first thing we do when we are born?  We take our first breath.  After that we don't think about how to breath, it just happens.  Then life conditions us with patterns, with psychological, physical and biological stress.  All of these contribute to the quality of our breath.  The quality of our breath effects the quality of our life.  Distorted breath allows you to survive, but not to thrive!

Equinox is the first day of spring.  Let it also be the celebration of the first breath, a conscious breath.  This is a workshop on breathing.  Discover more about the foundations of good breathing, how it can improve your quality of life, and make every cell quiver with the vitality of youth.  This workshop is open to both the new student as well as those who have an established practice.  It would be especially helpful to those who suffer from anxiety, shortness of breath and lack of energy.

There will be snacks after as well as the opportunity to get to know each other in this growing new community.  Together we will celebrate the return of spring!

DIY:  Radical Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is the art being with what is happening - just as it is. The Buddha described this practice as: “going against the stream” a radical shift in perspective, not following our habits, but simply being with.

This exploratory workshop will tease apart ancient teachings for our uncertain and modern time. We will explore mindfulness meditation techniques, philosophy, and how to bring mindful awareness into our daily life. When we develop a willingness to be curious and open to what is happening, there a possibility of deep understanding and self-compassion.

A Cherishing Night of Yoga…with Zoe!

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

6:00-9:00 pm

Make it a retreat. Smooth your nerves, treasure yourself, and relish this age & stage in your life.

WHY?

It’s an especially magical night, since Shanti is moving locations this spring. This will be our last chance to witness that astounding double sunset that streams through Shanti’s windows and kiss these beloved hardwood floors goodbye. Let’s light our candles and lanterns one last time together at this particular location that is teeming with all of our memories, tears, giggles, and deep lessons, before we welcome in Shanti’s next new location.

TIMES:

6:00-7:30 pm All-levels yoga class & philosophy teaching on “Aging.” It sounds like a sad topic, but it’s actually beautiful, hopeful, & tender! How does yoga philosophy make sense of aging? What does it mean to age? What does yoga philosophy offer us to help process our own aging and each other’s?

7:30-8:00 pm  Simple mouth-watering meal:  warm, buttery-tasting masala dosas, which are somehow vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free. These are individually wrapped for each of you so that you can move around, sit where you want, get a breath of fresh air, or take it with you to go if you need to leave early.

8:00-9:00 pm   Gentle yoga class & final meditation to lift our spirits & fill us with refreshed hope.

INVESTMENT:

$60 (total) to register for this Cherishing Night of Yoga.

REGISTRATION:

Since Shanti is moving that week, please contact Zoe Stikeman directly: zoestikeman@rogers.com or 647-922-9642

To register and reserve your spot before it fills up, please send Zoe an e-transfer to that same email address (zoestikeman@rogers.com) in the amount of $60 (total). Then Zoe will email you to thank you for your payment, and to confirm that you are officially registered.

SPACE IS LIMITED:

In the past, these special retreats have usually filled up very quickly. And it’s always heartbreaking when some people aren't able to attend due to space. So if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't wait to contact Zoe and register.

CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS:

If a schedule conflict arises for you (travel, illness, childcare, etc), then please do send in a friend/relative/neighbour to enjoy your spot in your place that night. Do take the time to line up a possible loved one who might like to attend instead.

Otherwise, we can gladly offer a 50% refund up until April 16.

Unfortunately, I hope that you understand that we cannot offer any refund on a cancellation made on April 17th.

We look forward to seeing your shining faces on Tuesday April 18th, from 6:00-9:00 pm.

Love,

Shanti

Yoga Nidra: With Karla Muzyka

Yoga Nidra is a guided meditative journey through the layers of our being. (physical, energetic, mental/emotional, intellectual/wisdom, bliss) It is a systematic guided method of meditation.

Through direct experience with each of these layers, in a deeply relaxed state, you are able to transcend your conscious mind and access your sub-conscious... which allows you to release stored programs and belief systems that you no longer need. You will also connect deeply into the wisdom and truth of your heart revealing pathways for effecting lasting change in your life. You are able to plant the seed of your deepest intention into the receptive, relaxed mind/body and create that which you truly desire for your life.

Yoga Nidra is deeply relaxing and offers many healing benefits to your mind/body:

- encourages exploration of the inner realms

- opportunity to become more embodied

- increases inner strength & personal power

- clearing of unconscious belief patterns

- shifts in limited thinking

- awakening of creativity

- counteracts stress

- release of blocked energy and healing

You will be guided from your waking "beta brain wave state" into a slower brain state called "Alpha brain wave state" where you can experience the authentic self which is not attached to the personality... In this deeply relaxed state you are able to experience higher levels of intuition, creativity and healing.

Tracking time in the alpha state offers you the effects of deep sleep. It has been proven that a 30 minute Nidra practice is equivalent to a 4 hour restful sleep.

This practice will leave you feeling recharged, grounded, rested and with a greater sense of wholeness.

Cost $16

Spring Yin Workshop: With Tori Lunden

It happens every spring. After the joy and jubilation of being able to play outside comes the aches and pains in areas we forgot we had. It comes as a bit of a shock to our bodies this shift to suddenly gardening, biking, running, hiking, along with all the other outdoor activities we love. Even for those that stay active through the winter; the spring is often accompanied by stiff muscles and creaky joints.

This extended practice will help our bodies through this rocky transition with a combination of gentle movement and passive, supported stretches for the shoulders, back, and hips. Take two hours to relax and restore so you can get on with enjoying our beautiful Edmonton summer.

This practice is suitable for beginners, experienced students, and especially beneficial for those with active lifestyles.

Cost: $30 (includes GST)
Please register in advance at http://www.shantiyogastudio.ca/events or call 780-421-9444

About Tori:

Tori's classes are always a fun and eclectic environment. She delights in teaching people who, like her, never thought yoga was something they could do let alone enjoy. Tori has a degree in social work from the University of Calgary and has been teaching yoga since 2008; when she would never again work anywhere that required her to sit for eight hours a day.

Mindfulness: Embracing Now

Join us for an afternoon of sitting Meditation, loving presence and relaxation. The art of Mindfulness is learning to be with life as it is, riding the waves of change - thoughts, feelings and emotions -  with ease and openness. We will explore how to embrace all aspects of ourselves and life, resting in silence and contemplation.

Offered in the spirit of Dana, Generosity:

In the Buddhist tradition, the teachings are given freely because they are considered priceless; in the Buddhist tradition we also practice dana, or generosity, by making monetary offerings for the teachings. Dana is not payment for goods or services rendered; it is given from the heart. Your generosity is a gift that supports not just the teachers, but also the Sangha, and your own practice.
